Vancouver Island flyfishing Update, Jan 10th

Have had some nice sea run cutthroat fishng recently, some up to 4lbs. With the little water we've had though it hasn't been Steelhead friendly as Steelhead like to push up the river in high water flows... I haven't been out much as I like the larger flows if I can choose my days. We're now getting a cold snap again and for the next few days so rivers will continue to drop however there should be the odd fish around for those anxious to get out! They might just be finicky fish but whats not to like about being on the water under some blue skies, certainly an afternoon fish:)

Cold temps make Low Rivers

Rivers have been lower than desirable lately as temps have been close to freezing on average. Any land above town is covered in snow! When the warmer temps arrive 5+ celcius or higher we'll see a push of water and hopefully Steelhead in some numbers too. One thing about swinging a fly to Island Steelhead is when our waters are low they can see everything and frankly would rather evacuate the watershed than hang around; and in early winter season many fish will just not come in from Salt till we get a push of water! This being said I'm hoping those venturing out to the low rivers are finding the odd one. I have not been Steelheading lately although I have been venturing to our local waters for a longshot at a possible Steely so I guess yes I have been wetting a line! Today I met up with a friend who lives for light tackle fishing for trout! I often do well catching trout on the big steelhead flies but no luck today however the light gear dug one up quicky in this water I previously fished. I have a feeling these trout are becoming well educated if being pounded on by local anglers. Either way good job my friend:)
